Volunteering at Northumbria

Northumbria University Sport offers all students the opportunity to become involved in our Professional Development programme - the first stage of which is volunteering.

Becoming part of this programme is your chance to get a first foot on the ladder within a vibrant, well recognised and well respected sports organisation to gain valuable and professional workplace experience. It also allows you to become an integral part of Northumbria University Sport as a whole and to represent our team.

We offer opportunities in a variety of areas including coaching, competitions, community sport, events, media, sports marketing and much more.

You are able to apply for ongoing long term volunteer positions within Northumbria University Sport or simply sign up to offer your assistance for weekly sessions or one-off events.

If you are serious about a career in sport, the Northumbria University Sport Volunteer programme is the place to start! Volunteering with us is the pre-requisite to apply for any internship positions or part time roles in subsequent years.

Throughout our programme you will learn what to do and how to do it. Once you have done the training you get the t-shirt - literally! Wear it when you work with us and spread the word.

We value the commitment of our volunteers and recognise this through providing Northumbria University Global Citizenship awards and volunteer certificates for your time. We may also put you forward to receive an award at our prestigious sports ball.

Volunteer Commitments

Volunteers can either apply for ongoing positions within specific areas of work or simply register their interest in volunteering to receive updates on the opportunities available and commit to any hours that they are able to.

With the exception of the one-off volunteer opportunities through our database students are expected to commit to a minimum of 30 hours volunteering for their chosen area.

Volunteers are eligible to receive Northumbria University Global Citizenship awards based on the following hours:

Award Hours
Bronze up to 50 hours
Silver up to 100 hours
Gold up to 200 hours
Platinum up to 300 hours

Who can take part?

All current Northumbria students can become involved in our volunteer programmes regardless of their academic course or year of study.

However, we do encourage students to become involved during their first year as this is the only way they will be eligible to apply for an internship position in the second and third years.

Volunteers can commit to as many or as few hours as they wish for our one off oportunities. Students who are interested in gaining experience in a specific area (detailed below) will need to commit to a minimum of 30 hours.
