Delivered by the Newcastle Eagles Community Foundation, Northumbria’s Basketball programme reaps many benefits from this unique partnership. Our National League and Women’s BUCS first teams have both made eight consecutive ‘Final Eights’ tournaments.

Men’s Basketball

Membership: Students £80.
However if you take out Platinum Membership you are entitled to Sport Club Memberships for 2 clubs (maximum).

Kit: Canterbury Vests and Shorts (Vests provided each Wednesday, students must buy shorts)

National League

Men’s Basketball

The Northumbria Men’s Basketball programme is steeped in tradition and benefits from a unique partnership with the most successful franchise in British Basketball League history, the Newcastle Eagles.  The team are under the leadership of newly appointed head coach Marc Steutel.

Women’s Basketball

The Team Northumbria Women's team were first promoted to the National League 1st Division in the 2006-7 season.  During the same year the team dominated the British Universities Final 8’s and lifted the Championship Trophy for the first time.  The Women's programme also boasts a Division 2 team to help with the development of future young talent.   

Deidre Hayes has been the Head Coach of the Women’s programme since 1992 and took over the Women’s University team in 1999.  She has also been assistant coach for the Great Britain Women’s University Basketball Team at the World Student Games as well as Head Coach of the England Under 18 team in the European Championships for 4 years.

Performance Sport

Athletes selected onto our Performance Sport Programme benefit from a range of specialist support designed to help talented athletes realise their potential. Each athlete receives a package of support up to a value of £8,000, which is based on their individual needs.

We welcome applications for all sports including basketball, and both home and international students, however we prioritise applications from athletes from sports in which we work in partnership with the National Governing Bodies to deliver their Excel or Performance programmes.

Therefore please be aware that we prioritise applications from athletes within Golf, Netball, Volleyball, Fencing, and Judo.

Scholarships

Every year Team Northumbria awards generous Sport Scholarships to talented athletes studying at Northumbria University.

There are four types of Scholarships available:
