Stan Calvert Live 2011

So M1 rugby union finishes in favour of the Posh: 24-13. Disappointing end to another fabulous day of sporting action.

Thanks to all of the Media Team for winning  our own personal battle with the Posh by providing the very best and most up-to-date coverage of Stan Calvert. Great job. It all seemed so exciting from my dining room. It must have been so much better in the flesh (apart from the bit where the Lincolnator donned his Speedos). See you next year!

Just waiting for the M1 rugby result now and what a day it's been. Gusty display by the Poly but once again it's the Posh who mop up. That's four consecutive Stan Calvert titles for our fierce rivals from across the city. Tough to take but then nobody said this would be easy.

Those looking at the overall score - the 76-54 includes everything bar the M1 rugby union (obviously), M4 rugby union, W1 squash, W2 squash, M1 tennis and M2 tennis. These results have escaped me all day and try as I might to find them it just hasn't happened. But as you can probably work even a win every time wouldn't be enough :(

M1 hoops all over. Big 81-57 win for coach Steutel and his crew as indisciplined Posh lose the plot.

Still only three points in it at the rugby but Poly the Parrot has half inched the Posh Lion's tail. I've know some crazy old birds in my time but Poly beats them all...

Thrilling scenes in the athletics as Poly men and women clean up in 4X100m relays to win overall crown. Sensational achievement.

Rugby evenly poised at half-time: Posh 15 Poly 12.

And Poly leading M1 hoops 56-39 with a quarter to play. Our coach Marc Steutel picks up technical foul as he loses rag with officials. Lincolnator loving it!

Mascots brawling at the rugby. Time to grow up lads. Oh, sorry, you dress up as furry animals so growing up has never been an option.

Meanwhile the fighting theme continues in the M1 hoops showdown. Poly lead 45-24 at the half. Lincolnator: "A fiesty half." He probably means feisty. Then again he could mean fisty. But knowing Ollie even he doesn't know what he means.

M1 footy won 5-4 by the way. I had said that but it disappeared. There was a mention of M2 footy coach Colin Stromsoy on there - and not a complimentary one at that - so I suspect the powers that be had that paragraph removed.

W1 netball win 39-33. Kim Duncan: "It was a good game. It's my last ever game for Northumbria so it really means a lot. It's the biggest game of the year for us."

It's a clean sweep for Posh squash (think Robinson's Barley water) in the men's event. Poor Hit And Miskell didn't see a single win as our spy behind enemy lines.

Athletics sounds like a thriller with everything riding - or running - on the final event of the day. The 4X100m. Let's hope our chaps haven't been watching the GB team anytime lately. It's a baton. You pass it. And run. Simple.

It's 5-4 to the Poly in what's turning out to be an absolute classic in the M1 footy. Last goal could be a Posh own-goal. Now that would be sweet.

Little & Large are running out of tapes after a mammoth effort behind the camera. But they're still going strong and Rich still has the rugby to come...

Right - gymnastics in. Men lost 144.65-111.40 but Poly women snatched a thrilling win 109.75-102.35. Brilliant stuff. It's 4-4 in the M1 footy...

Yige's still waiting for the scores from the gymnastics at Benfield but she's grabbed Poly skipper Hazel O'Neill who says: "I'm so proud of today's performance. Everyone was doing fantastic. It's our first year and we overcame so many difficulties. We enjoyed it. Whatever the results are I love Poly!"

It's 4-2 in the M1 footy after Watlen bags another!

And the W1 basketball team have wrapped up a huge 111-37 win. Lincolnator: "To say it was a walk in the park would be an understatement." It would. But you said it anyway.

Seesaw clash at GIS as Poly lead Posh 3-2 in M1 footy. Rest assured Little & Large will have all of the key moments in the can.

Athletics on a knife-edge. All square with just relays to go. You could cut the tension with a javelin.

The Lincolnator reports W1 basketball are 89-33 up early in the fourth and in his expert opinion it's 'no contest'. Really?

M1 football 2-1 up through a Peter Watlen strike.

Hit And Miskell looking for his first Poly win reports: "It's 1-1 in the best of five strings in the M1 squash. Nobody sure which way this will go."

'Persistent' Fowler is now keeping tabs on the netball where he's just witnessed a last-gasp 34-33 win for the seconds. Nicola Doolan said: We kept it tight. It was a really close game but we picked it up towards the end. I thought we deserved the win."

A couple of basketball results in too: M3 lost 65-70 but M2 won 78-55.

Men's footy scores finally dropped and it's good news. M2 won 3-1 with goals from Nathan O'Neil, Richard Ialley and Tom Robinson. And M3 won 4-0. Footy clean sweep for second year running anyone? M1 drawing 1-1...Jonny Blewett just levelled for Poly with low, curling shot.

M2 coach Colin Stromsoy: "We played very well and I was very pleased with our commitment and attitude. A thoroughly deserved win and we're glad to do our bit for the cause." With analysis like that don't expect to see Alan Shearer or Alan Hansen sweating on the MOTD sofa anytime soon.

Malla has sacked off is dissertation (albeit temporarily) and sprinted across from the library to check out the table tennis. The poor lad probably wishes he hadn't bothered. "Ping pong's just finished and it's a clean sweep for the Posh," he tells us. "M1 lost 9-8, M2 lost 15-2 and W1 lost 3-2." Back to the books for you then mate.

Breathe a sigh of relief. Lincolnator has joined 'Persistent' Fowler and Moore The Merrier at Gateshead for the final stretch. The A-Team. As they like to call themselves and nobody else ever would.

Anyway Ollie says: "Checked in at the W1 basketball and I think the score is 44-16 to us. Trouble is, the scoreboard is so tiny half the crowd can't see it." Come on Ollie, it's the women's basketball. There must be some tall lasses knocking about who can see the board and tell you the score...

There's no way to put this politely but over at the gymnastics Yige tells us that the men's rings are done and dusted. Women's beam about to start.

Tom 'Zorro' Williams sounds gutted after the Posh come from behind to win the W1 fencing 2-1. Poly lost third and final weapon (sabre) 45-39.

Ok I'm back after a little issue with the scoreboard. As of now it's Posh 42 Poly 24 after a rough run down of the scores in so far.

Hit And Miskell caught up with Posh squash M3 skipper Ben Turrock after their 3-0 win and he said: "I'm obviously happy with the performances. All three games were very close but I would say the better team won." You would, wouldn't you.

Posh squash seconds also won 3-0. Hit And Miskell: "Not much of a look-in for Northumbria. Newcastle showed real quality in pursuit of their clean sweep."

Netball thirds lose 55-31 but live from the fencing here's Tom 'Zorro' Williams: "The men won all three weapons to claim a convincing victory. Great stuff. Women lost second of three weapons (foil) so it's 1-1 with one weapon to play." Sounds like he knows his stuff!

Big win for men's volleyball as they clinch the third set 25-18 to complete a 3-0 victory and a clean sweep on the Sport Central courts. Lincolnator now heading over to Gateshead for some hoops action.

It's 0-0 in the W1 hockey clash at Coach Lane. Adam Ant: "Very close. End-to-end stuff." Just how we like it.

The Posh won the clay pigeon clash after what sounded like a thrilling match - Poly finally going down 190-184.

Women's squash lost 3-1 and Yige Wang is poised to bring us all the latest from Benfield Gymnastics Centre where there are a load of women on the floor. I think that's what she said. Sounds like the scene when Lincolnator walked into Sport Central in his Speedos...

It's all going a bit crazy now but here goes.

Newsflash one: Posh player yellow carded in the hockey.

Newsflash two: TN's Sade Hacking on women's rugby defeat: "I'm extremely proud of the girls. It could have gone either way. But I guess the best team won."

Newsflash three: All square in the athletics. Moore The Merrier: " A dramatic dip for the line by Jayne Carmichael ensures Poly steal the win in the women's 60m. Even more impressive given she just finished her Stan Calvert hockey match 20 minutes before the race. Evidence of the Poly spirit!" Indeed. Well said Phillip. And well done Jayne - early contender for Poly MVP 2011.

Newsflash four: Second string squash matches for seconds and third both went to Posh. Hit And Miskell: "Two very close games and Poly very unlucky not to get anything so far."

Newsflash five: Volleyball men win second set 25-13.

Women's lacrosse lose 26-2. Thanks to special correspondent Emily for that one. M3 rugby were well beaten.

In the W1 hockey Poly have just had a penalty saved (I used to be a hockey goalkeeper - ed. Never saved a penalty though).

Point apiece in the men's golf. M1 lose 5.5-0.5 but M2 win. Poly chose to field two mixed teams according to Tom W who adds: "Diasppointing as Posh M1 have been rubbish all season, losing both games against Northumbria." That's it - tell it like it is!

"Closer than you might expect," is the verdict of the Lincolnator after set one of the men's volleyball. After a quick shower and a towel down he's hot-footed it from the pool to take his place back in the heart of Sport Central. Poly won the opener 25-18 but Ollie adds: "Our boys just warming up, I'm sure."

Meanwhile big Rich reports some disappointing news from Cochrane Park where our women's rugby team have been defeated 12-0. Apparently the Posh captain took issue with some of little Mike's close-up angles and he's been taken away by the Newcastle pack as we speak. It's like being a war correspondent in Libya this job. A bit. No doubt Rich will come to his rescue. After he's had that pasty.

Sam Stanislaus leapt to a massive 14m10cm in the triple jump and Moore The Merrier says: "The atmosphere is buzzing over at the indoor track. The blue ribband event, the 60m sprint, is up next. Poly really need a win to claw back the 5-3 deficit." They do indeed. But remember it's a marathon, not a sprint. Or, in this case, it is actually a sprint.

Finally the squash is underway at the Posh sports centre and four matches are on at once - stretching the ability of Hit And Miskell to the limit. He says: "The third string matches for the seconds and thirds (ok, you've lost me already - ed) are finished. Posh won both. Good atmosphere and a decent standard of squash all round." Just as well, really. After that wait it would have been mightily annoying if nobody was any good.

Northumbria win 200m 'normal style' women's race in the pool. Normal style? We love our precise sporting terminology here! Posh men win their race. Breaststroke spilt evenly too.

Some fantastic detail from Tom 'Zorro' Williams at the fencing. "Northumbria W1 fencing - Poly player awarded a yellow card for kit failure, sword's tip not being picked up by sensor. Nothing major, just a warning. A red card would have been a penalty point to the opposition - a black card equalling dismissal from the game." Absorbing stuff, I think you'll agree. Black cards? They sound pure evil. It's probably better to get your eye poked out by a foil than have a black card brandished in your face. Probably.

Fencing update and this year Tom Williams is having a stab at a sport nobody really understands even after watching it in that Bond film a few years back.

Anyway the Poly men have won two of the three weapons to date (does that mean they get to take them home?) and the women have own the first of three (the epee) with a thrilling 45-42 win. You don't need to understand it. Just feel the drama.

M1 hockey has finished 4-3 to the Posh. Sounds like a cracking second half comeback from the Poly. So near, yet so far.

And the Lincolnator's having a splashing (see what I've done there?) time in the pool watching the men and women bag 200m butterfly wins. "Watching all that Olympic swimming is paying off," he reports. Not sure what he means there. But if he's happy we're happy.

Lincolnator in his element in the pool. "Northumbria win the first race by five seconds," he reports. "I think it was a women's relay with every style of swimming."

I like that - 'Every style of swimming'. Great way to hide the fact that you don't know your butterfly from your breaststroke.

Hang on, he's back. "Northumbria win again," explains Ollie. "Same type of race (that'll be an 'every style' race then - ed) but it's the men this time. Victory by milliseconds! Exciting stuff!" That's why he's used the exclamation marks, you see. To highlight the excitement. The Lincolnator is back!

Athletics latest from Phillip 'Moore The Merrier': Posh 4 Poly 2 after a win and a draw in the shot put (or putt?). Mental block.

The Lincolnator's moved over to the swimming pool. "First time I've seen it," he says. "Just starting now." We really, really, really hope he doesn't mean he's starting to swim now. Let's just say wor Ollie is no Phelps. It's 4-2 Posh in the M1 hockey. And it's stopped raining all over poor Adam.

Turns out that was the third and final set in the women's volleyball at Sport Central and the Poly won it 25-11. If you can believe anything that our Chief Reporter says. The Lincolnator needs to up his game. Fast.

The Likely Lads have arrived at Cochrane Park for the big women's rugby clash - we reckon Rich could get a game in the Posh front row - and the hosts lead 7-0 after 22 minutes.

Elsewhere M1 hockey down 4-1, women's volleyball dominating the next set. "Potentially the second or third," reveals the Lincolnator. "Good serving and spiking in my 'expert' opinion." Yep, no need to stick 'expert' in inverted commas Ollie. We get the irony. Or, in this case, the deep irony.

Still no sign of squash getting started at the Posh sports hall. Stephen 'Hit And Miskell': "Organisation is questionable to say the least." Get in there Steve - don't give those Posh officials an easy ride son.

That flood of support has boosted the women's volleyball side as they went on a 15-5 tear to clinch the set at Sport Central. Which set that is is open to debate as the Lincolnator arrived fashionably late and doesn't really have a clue.

Meanwhile Aadam 'Ant' Hartley tells us it's all kicking off in the M1 hockey clash. Our skipper's been warned by the ref and the cidered-up Posh fans are getting increasingly rowdy. They'd better not get too near to Hartley. He's a Carlisle fan you know. It could get ugly.

The Lincolnator checks in with a W1 volleyball latest score - and the Posh are 11-10 up at Sport Central. If you're in the library, in the SU or even in the toilet then get over there now and give the girls some backing. Do it. Now.

Ok, I've given up eating. Got about six texts from the Media Team. There's enthusiasm. And there's lunchtime.

Anyway women's badminton won 5-2. Get in there.

Northumbria were dominating the M1 hockey but are now 3-0 down. Hartley getting a bit hot under the collar - can't repeat what he said after goal number three.

Or maybe he's just getting wet under the collar but he does report: "Everyone on sidelines getting [merry]. Folk from Newcastle Uni. Lots of cider going round." By everyone I hope he means everyone except the TN Media Team representative...

Still eating but just to say the Lincolnator is in the building. Sport Central, that is. And he couldn't resist poking fun at those colleagues braving the elements this year while he watches sport with a roof over his head. "Painful flashbacks to last year," he says. "At least I'm inside this time." Ok, no need to rub it in. So am I, by the way. With my brie.

Just going to grab some lunch so no updates for the time it takes me to stuff in a nice piece of brie, some bread, salt n vinegar Kettle Chips, cherry tomatoes and Tesco's Finest (obviously) potato salad. Could be some time...

Women's badminton already guaranteed victory with one game still ongoing!!! A win for M1 and it'll be a clean sweep on the badminton courts...no pressure there then.

Finally word from the badminton courts of Gateshead Stadium and it's good news from Andy 'Persistent' Fowler.

"M2 badminton took down Newcastle 6-2 (that will probably change to 5-2 in a few minutes - ed) thanks in part to the 35-strong Poly support," says our man courtside. Looking forward to his updates during the M1 clash where he'll be playing and texting at the same time...

M2 hockey actually finished 5-2. One of the Posh goals was disallowed. Shame a few more weren't.

Skipper Tate: "It was a good result considering they're two leagues above us. We played well, it was close and we were unlucky to lose out."

M2 hockey final: 6-2 Posh. According to Adam it's starting to rain in the Coach Lane area. Talk about deja vu all over again. It was this time last year when the Lincolnator got soaked watching hockey and we all know what happened to the rugby later on...

Let's hope this is only a shower. And that Adam took my advice and packed a brolly...

M2 hockey are now 6-2 down. Six goals, that is, Adam.

Big Rich must have read my mind - it's probably the only thing he's ever read - as the score from the M1 cricket has just dropped.

And it's an agonising 14-run defeat for the Poly. The only upside is that the odd couple probably managed to miss everything...

M2 hockey latest and Adam reveals a comeback could be on the cards...4-2!

"Was a class goal," says our man pitchside. "At least I think it's called a goal. Edge of box, top corner." We think it's called a goal too.

Btw - wonder what's happening at the cricket? Little & Large are eerily quiet...

M2 hockey down 4-1 now. Can't be long left.

Hartley reports the Poly are 3-1 down into the second half of the M2 hockey.

Hockey skipper Chris Tate: "It's pretty tight. Just need everyone to get noisy and loud." Noisy, fair enough. Loud, not a problem. But noisy AND loud. That's a big ask - even for a fired up Poly crowd.

Rock star Adam Ant might have announced his first UK tour for years this week but we're more interested in media star Adam Hartley.

And he's announced his arrival at Stan Calvert 2011 with an update from the hockey pitches of Tyneside.

Our M2 are 2-0 down. Cheers Adam - we preferred the silent treatment.

Meanwhile, back at South North and Big Rich reports that the Posh made 108-3 in the M1 cricket clash. Decent target. But will it be good enough?

Into today's cricket clash of the day as the Poly firsts take on the Posh at the South North Cricket Centre.

Billions might be watching India v Pakistan but Big Rich and Little Mike are watching this one. And they know a good cricket match when they see one.

Seconds skittled out for 80 and lost by 21 runs in the second of today's men's cricket clashes.

Big Rich: "Never really got near after a slow start." Is he talking about the cricket team or his camera work? More news to follow.

And the first results are in from TN Media's roving reporters and Big Rich has news from the South North Cricket Centre.

What a start for the men - restricting the Posh 3rds to 95-1 off 12 overs and wrapping up a nine wicket win with four overs to spare! "Good win," reports Rich. Good? It's fantastic. But he's not a man who lets his emotions run wild. And probably just as well with a long way to go...

Having said that he's a little more excited about the seconds. "Newcastle 101 all out off 10.3 overs," reveals Rich. "Good death bowling. Excellent fielding." Death bowling? Really?

Mike chips in - just to prove he's actually there - and adds: "Three of Newcastle's opening balls were wides. In other news Rich is having a right mare trying to work out if the camera is straight or the pitch is wonky." That would be funny...if you didn't know these two.

Mike adds: "There's a huge six by Northumbria's 33 (how many blokes are on one team - ed. I've been inside the South North Cricket Centre and there's barely enough room to swing a cat let alone play 33-a-side cricket) and then a low blow, so to speak. Swings and roundabouts." Indeed.

Welcome to this year's rolling coverage of the biggest sporting event on the Northumbria University calendar.

It's four years since we tasted victory over the Posh. And this time it's serious.

So serious that Team Northumbria's Media Team are all over Stan Calvert 2011 and throughout the day we'll be bringing you the latest news and views right here.

We've got reporters at all the major venues with our very own Little & Large, Mike 'He Ain't Heavy' Lightfoot and Rich 'He Is Heavy' Martin, checking in at the South North Cricket Centre as we speak. If you see sport's most unlikely couple with a camera then that's them - say hello and give Rich a biscuit.

Andy 'Persistent' Fowler (just as the Newcastle Water Polo boys) is about to land at Gateshead where he'll be bringing us all the latest on his specialist sport of badminton. Fingers crossed he can play better than he can write.

And after lunch we'll be right across the big events as they happen - at Coach Lane, Cochrane Park, Sport Central, the Posh sports centre, Benfield gymnastics centre and, of course, Gateshead Stadium.

The Lincolnator will be leading the TN Media team at Sport Central and Gateshead after we were forced to cancel the whole event before Christmas because his lass was coming up from London (don't believe the official line about the weather).

This page is going nowhere - and neither should you. Check in again around noon for the first round-up with minute-by-minute updates after that! Come on Poly!!
