Northumbria University hockey firsts made the most of a golden opportunity to close the gap on league leaders Durham with an emphatic away win at Leeds Met.
Durham went into the latest round of BUCS fixtures on top of Northern 2B.
But Northumbria are breathing down their neck after a 7-2 victory on the road.
Forward James Moorhouse opened the scoring for the visitors with an outstanding solo effort from inside his own half.
This was a sign of more to come from the Leeds man adding another brilliant goal and striking the crossbar.
Northumbria dominated the first 35 minutes going into the break with a healthy 4–0 lead. The visitors were in complete control and in the mood for more goals after the break.
Dan Shaw led the away side out taking nothing for granted as he knew the potential threats of Leeds Met.
And this attitude shone through as the away side continued to play the better hockey and dominated both possession and territory - eventually adding three more goals with Steven Kelso bagging himself a hat-trick taking the score to 7–0.
As a degree of complacency finally crept in Stuart Fry was sent off for a professional foul to stop the home side scoring. This dismissal led to Leeds Met scoring two goals with 10 minutes to go.
But Northumbria closed out the win to continue their superb form this season.
They host Leeds University next week and will try to continue the stylish playing style they have adopted and superb form to try and close in on the league leaders.
