Zambia IDEALS Project

Northumbria University forms part of the Wallace group which was established in 2005 bringing together 6 of the UK’s leading sporting universities ; Bath, Durham, Loughborough,  Northumbria , UWIC and Stirling to work on strategic international sport development projects. In 2011 the group was also joined by St.Andrews University.

The Wallace group works in partnership with UK Sport to deliver the Zambia IDEALS project (International Development, Education and Leaderships through Sport). This community project based in the capital city, Lusaka, utilises the skills of students to engage with children and young people through the delivery of physical activity and sport to educate about HIV/AIDS.

In pairs students work with local peer leaders and site coordinators from two partner NGO’s (Non Government Organisations), Sport In Action and EduSport on a 6 week placement in one of the community sites around Lusaka; Kalingalinga, Chipata, Munali, Chawama, Ngombe, and Fountain of hope.

Be part of it

How do you get involved?
Every year each University recruits five Zambia project students to fundraise throughout the year and travel to Zambia the following summer. Four students are selected as sport coaches and one as a media student.

Who are we looking for?
We require enthusiastic, fun, energetic students who can throw themselves into this unique cultural exchange and experience of a lifetime! We need students that can commit to the project in terms of fundraising and training/development requirements throughout the year as well as the 6 weeks in Zambia during the summer.

For the coaching roles we need students that can competently coach one or more of the following key sports; football, netball, volleyball and basketball. For the media role we look for a student with a keen interest in one or more of the following areas of journalism, marketing, e-communications, advertising and promotion who would publicise the project through writing articles for local press both in Zambia and the UK and utilising their other skills raise awareness of the project and the students and universities involved.

What’s the deal?

  • Fundraising commitment – as part a team you will be required to raise £3-4000 each
  • Training and development – attend the annual training weekend for all IDEALS students (usually in April) along with any other training required (first aid, child protection etc)
  • Spend 5/6 weeks during summer 2012 in Lusaka at the heart of Zambia with a group of between 12 and 15 like minded students from across the Wallace universities.
  • Complete a life changing placement within one of Lusaka’s communities delivering sport sessions and HIV/AIDS education within schools and community compounds each day.
  • As a group organise the renowned  ‘Wallace Tournament’
  • In your spare time visit Livingstone and experience such things as Victoria Falls, Safari, White rafting and Bungee jumping.

The team for 2012 has been chosen, see below.

However, 2013 could be your year, look out for updates next summer to see how you can get involved and how to apply.
